Khus is a plant species belonging to Poaceae family which is indigenous to the country India. It is found primarily in northern zone. It is a perennial plant which is grown extensively for its many medicinal applications. It is used widely for treating various health disorders and infirmities. It is especially used in Ayurveda (Indian traditional medical system). The oil is extracted from the dried rhizomes of the khus plant through a process of steam distillation. The mixture of the Khus flower essential oil and Indian Sandalwood essential oil makes up Khus Attar. The oil obtained from the dehydrated roots of 18 to 24 months old is of superior quality. The botanical name of the evergreen plant Khus is Vetiveria Zizanoides which is a Tamil term.
It is a dark green solution having a warm, woody, balsam, earthy odor which makes up a spicy note. This oil mingles well with other fragrances such as Rose, Jasmine, Sandalwood, Ylang Ylang, Lavender, Cinnamon, etc. It is regarded as mild solution because of its non-toxic and non- irritant properties.
